O ataque aconteceu no domingo em Albany, ao sul de Perth, no litoral oeste australiano. Michael Bedford saiu da prancha de surfe após o primeiro ataque do que, segundo se acredita, era um grande tubarão branco.Segundo testemunhas, o surfista evitou um segundo ataque batendo no tubarão com os punhos e depois aproveitou uma onda para se aproximar da margem onde seus companheiros fizeram um torniquete por causa de uma mordida na perna. “Deu-lhe um bom murro, e não me surpreende nada conhecendo Mick”, disse uma das testemunhas, Lee Cummuskey, em declarações à rádio pública ABC. “Este é o pior dos pesadelos. Mick conseguiu sobreviver. Teve muita sorte”, acrescentou. Como consequência da ferida na perna, Bedford teve que ser operado e seu estado foi descrito como estável.
